St. Louis Police Board to Consider a Paid Pre-Recruit Program on October 21: Candidates Who Cleared Hiring Could Earn the $56,732 Recruit Salary While Awaiting the Academy, for Up to Four Months

St. Louis, Missouri, an independent city — The St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners will consider establishing a Police Pre-Recruit position on Wednesday, October 21, to help the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department hire and retain qualified candidates before their next Police Academy class begins, the department announced.
Under the proposal, candidates who have successfully completed all required hiring screenings could voluntarily participate for an anticipated maximum of four months, receiving the established Police Recruit salary of $56,732 annually, prorated for their time in the position, along with applicable recruit benefits. Participants would complete supervised physical conditioning, departmental orientation, professional development and rotations through department divisions, with assignments limited to duties appropriate for individuals who have not completed academy training or obtained law enforcement certification.
"We cannot afford to lose qualified people who are ready to serve St. Louis simply because they are waiting for the next academy class," said Board President Chris Saracino. Chief Robert J. Tracy said the program would allow the department to keep future officers engaged, help them prepare physically and professionally, and introduce them to the people and mission they will serve, calling it an investment in their success and the long-term safety of the city's neighborhoods.
