Downtown St. Louis Raises City of Legends Banners Honoring Stan Musial, Tina Turner and Other Local Legends

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

A new set of City of Legends banners has begun going up in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, in recent days, honoring famous people with St. Louis ties, ahead of a formal announcement on Wednesday, October 21. The effort is led by Greater St. Louis Inc., the regional business lobby, and the banners are sponsored by major downtown firms such as Ameren and Stifel, with the aim of beautifying the city center, stimulating business and drawing tourism and conventions.

Banners visible Monday along Tucker Boulevard include Cardinals slugger and baseball Hall of Famer Stan Musial; Tina Turner, the Sumner High School graduate celebrated as the queen of rock and roll; Jon Hamm, the John Burroughs School graduate; and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the Olympic gold medalist from East St. Louis. The full group of honorees also includes Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson, Blues enforcer Kelly Chase, McDonnell Aircraft founder James McDonnell and Chuck Berry, known as the father of rock and roll.

Boosters say momentum is growing for a downtown comeback: new state laws have made money available for extra police patrols and expanded tax credit programs to help turn vacant office buildings into apartments or condos; city officials have budgeted $55 million in NFL Rams settlement dollars to improve the riverfront, fix up infrastructure and tackle empty buildings; and a new food hall is expected to open this month on Washington Avenue, filling a space left when the city shut down the Reign nightclub after a string of shootings.
