Tampa Police Launch Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Campaign Through May 2027

Tampa is a city in Hillsborough County, Florida. The City of Tampa said on October 14 that the Tampa Police Department is again partnering with the Institute for Police Technology and Management and the University of North Florida in a statewide safety campaign aimed at reducing serious-injury and fatal crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists. The initiative runs through May 2027 and brings an increased police presence to Tampa's roadways.
Officers will conduct targeted enforcement and educational outreach on Florida traffic laws and the shared responsibility of everyone using the streets, the city said. Efforts focus on nine high-traffic areas, including East Busch Boulevard, West Hillsborough Avenue, North Nebraska Avenue, East Fowler Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, West Kennedy Boulevard, North Florida Avenue, North and South Dale Mabry Highway, and downtown.
Acting Chief Brett Owen said the goal is to save lives and prevent tragedies through education and enforcement. The campaign is part of the Florida Department of Transportation's Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow initiative, funded through a contract with FDOT and IPTM, prioritizing areas with a history of severe crashes.
