Buccaneers Safety Winfield Returns to Practice in Black Jersey, Status Still in Question

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. returned to practice on Wednesday, October 21, in Tampa, Florida. Winfield has missed the past two games after cracking a rib against the Green Bay Packers in Week Four, and at the time of the injury it was estimated that he would miss two to four weeks.

Most of the Buccaneers' defenders were in red jerseys on Wednesday, but Winfield was in black, which signals that other players on the field should take extra caution not to make contact with him. Until he can shed that specialty jersey, he will likely remain sidelined on game days. The Buccaneers play at the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Head Coach Todd Bowles said Winfield is recovering, that he has to practice first and get out of the non-contact jersey before he can come back, and that while Winfield is getting there, Bowles does not know if he is there yet, with Thursday and Friday still to come. A sixth-year safety has assumed Winfield's starting spot during the past two games and has nine tackles on the season; he would also start in Carolina if Winfield is unable to return. Winfield has a history of strong performances against the Panthers: in 10 games against the division rivals, he has 51 tackles, 5.0 sacks and one interception.
