Selmon Expressway Expansion Begins in Tampa: $362 Million Widening to Six Lanes Closes Downtown Intersection for Two Years

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

TAMPA, Florida — A downtown Tampa street, in Hillsborough County, Florida, has closed for two years as construction crews expand the Selmon Expressway. According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) has started the South Selmon Capacity Project, after traffic on the Selmon Expressway grew by more than 80 percent over the last 10 years. The 4.5-mile project stretches from west of Himes Avenue to east of Florida Avenue and will widen the expressway to six lanes.

During construction, South Tampa Street is closed at East Brorein Street for two years so crews can install the support pillars required for the expansion. Drivers on East Brorein Street lose the far-left lane between South Morgan Street and South Florida Avenue; that lane serves as a temporary thruway connecting drivers to Franklin Street and the Tampa Convention Center's upper loading docks. Detour signs and barricades are in place throughout the area, and the Tampa Convention Center parking garage stays open during construction. The City of Tampa says the $362 million project is funded by THEA toll revenues. (GSM, based on FOX 13 Tampa Bay reporting)
