Tampa's Green Spine Cycle Track Now Complete: 3.5-Mile Protected Route Finished After a Decade

TAMPA, Florida — The City of Tampa announced on October 22 that the Green Spine Cycle Track, more than a decade in the making, is now complete. The Green Spine is a 3.5-mile protected, two-way bike route featuring three-foot raised concrete dividers between cyclists and drivers. It runs east-west from North Hyde Park through Tampa's downtown core, through Ybor City and into East Tampa, reaching as far as East 21st Street.
The final piece, Phase 2A, runs along West Cass Street between North Howard and North Rome avenues and spans more than a third of a mile; construction began last October and wrapped up in September. Mayor Jane Castor said the infrastructure has helped revitalize urban communities, with new businesses opening along Cass Street and residents using the track daily to bike and scooter to work and school, exercise, and explore their neighborhoods. The city's Eco-Counter at North Boulevard and Cass Street counted nearly 80,000 cyclists on the Green Spine in 2025 and has recorded nearly 60,000 so far in 2026.
Nearly 80 percent of the project's roughly $8 million total cost was covered by grants, with the remaining $1.6 million coming from city funds. A small segment near North 15th Street will be completed by a Florida Department of Transportation contractor, likely next spring, following its interstate work.
