Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Refills in Washington; Inspection Found Liner Failed in at Least 85 Places

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · City · GSM News

USA Today reported on October 14 that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington began refilling this week, with water flowing back in on Monday, October 12, as contractors finished repairs left over from a renovation. A National Park Service sign said crews were putting final touches on cleaning, repair and beautification work.

The Washington Post reported on October 14 that an inspection found the pool's new liner had failed in at least 85 places, with blistering, peeling and cracks attributed to installation errors, wrong materials and a rushed schedule. The renovation's final cost ran far above its original estimate, after earlier reports of peeling blue coating and algae problems.

The Interior Department said the contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings, is contractually obligated to fix the pool and is making progress. The work has included replacing deteriorating water valves, flushing clogged pipes, sealing leaks, pressure-washing sidewalks, and replacing the water treatment system with a nanobubbler system. The department said the pool will soon reopen.
