Seven California Ports Win More Than $1 Billion in Federal Grants: Port of Los Angeles Gets $411.69 Million, the Nation's Largest

The Governor's Office in Sacramento, California, announced on October 29 that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had awarded more than $1 billion under the federal Clean Ports Program to seven California ports, to build zero-emission infrastructure, deploy cleaner cargo-handling equipment and improve air quality around the ports. California received about a third of the total funding announced nationwide that day.

The Port of Los Angeles received $411.69 million, the nation's largest clean ports grant, to accelerate its shift to zero-emission on-terminal operations, deploy zero-emission cargo handling equipment and expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The Port of Oakland received $322.17 million, the Port of Stockton $110.47 million, the Port of San Diego $58.6 million, the Port of San Francisco $55.39 million, the Port of Hueneme $42.29 million and the Port of Redwood City $1.97 million. San Francisco's project will transition its ferry operations to zero emissions, removing an estimated 455,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Governor Gavin Newsom said that with historic support from the Biden-Harris Administration and California's congressional leaders, the state's ports are undergoing a rapid transition to zero emissions, and that cleaner ports mean cleaner air for communities up and down the state. The Governor's Office noted that California ports handle about 40 percent of the nation's containerized imports and 30 percent of America's exports.
