Wednesday, November 6, 2024 · California · GSM News

A wildfire broke out on the morning of November 6 near Somis in Ventura County, California. Named the Mountain Fire, it spread rapidly under strong Santa Ana winds into communities including Camarillo, becoming one of California's most destructive wildfires of 2024.

An incident update issued on November 22 by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) put the fire's origin near Balcom Canyon Road and Bradley Road in Somis, under unified command of CAL FIRE's San Luis Obispo unit and the Ventura County Fire Department. The fire ultimately burned 19,904 acres, destroyed 243 structures and damaged 127 others. Five civilians and one firefighter were injured, and there were no fatalities.

Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency in Ventura County during the fire and issued an executive order supporting response and recovery efforts. Ventura County and the City of Camarillo opened a Local Assistance Center on November 14 to help affected residents with rebuilding, tax relief, permits and housing.

All evacuations were lifted as of 3:00 p.m. on November 17, and the fire was 98 percent contained as of November 22. CAL FIRE listed the cause as under investigation. (Source: California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection)
