Republicans Win House Majority, Securing Control of the White House and Both Chambers of Congress

Wednesday, November 13, 2024 · Federal · GSM News

Republicans locked up a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives on November 13. The Associated Press announced that day that Republicans had won at least 218 seats, the threshold for a majority in the 435-seat House; combined with the presidential result and the Senate majority decided earlier, the party had won the White House and both chambers of Congress in the 2024 election.

In the Senate, Republicans flipped several seats to take a 53-to-47 majority. The same day, Senate Republicans elected Senator John Thune of South Dakota as their next majority leader, and House Republicans renominated Speaker Mike Johnson for a full term as speaker, subject to a floor vote when the 119th Congress convenes on January 3, 2025.

"It's a new day in America," Johnson wrote on social media that day. He said the American people want secure borders, lower costs, safe communities, and strength on the world stage, and that under President Trump, House Republicans would deliver and help usher in a new golden age in America.

The final House tally later settled at 220 seats for Republicans and 215 for Democrats. The 119th Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2025, and President-elect Trump takes office on January 20. (Source: U.S. House of Representatives)
