U.S. Trade Deficit Narrows to $105.0 Billion in September as Exports Rise 1.9%

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau reported on November 4 that the U.S. goods and services trade deficit was $105.0 billion in September, down $0.7 billion from a revised $105.7 billion in August. The deficit narrowed because exports rose more than imports: September exports were $321.5 billion, up 1.9 percent ($5.8 billion), while imports were $426.6 billion, up 1.2 percent ($5.2 billion).
The September decrease reflected a $0.7 billion drop in the goods deficit to $135.9 billion and a decrease of less than $0.1 billion in the services surplus to $30.9 billion. Exports of goods rose $5.1 billion to $211.0 billion, with capital goods up $3.8 billion (computers up $1.3 billion) and foods, feeds and beverages up $1.9 billion (soybeans up $1.3 billion), while industrial supplies fell $1.0 billion as nonmonetary gold dropped $3.4 billion. Imports of goods rose $4.4 billion to $346.9 billion; capital goods imports jumped $11.6 billion on a Census basis (computers up $7.6 billion, computer accessories up $5.7 billion, semiconductors down $1.2 billion) and consumer goods rose $2.4 billion, led by pharmaceutical preparations, up $2.9 billion. Exports of services rose $0.7 billion to $110.5 billion and imports of services rose $0.8 billion to $79.7 billion.
Year to date, the goods and services deficit has decreased $92.4 billion, or 12.2 percent, from the same period in 2025, with exports up $297.3 billion (11.6 percent) and imports up $204.9 billion (6.2 percent).
On a Census basis, the largest September deficits were with Mexico ($28.7 billion), Vietnam ($25.3 billion), Taiwan ($21.9 billion, up $3.6 billion), China ($17.9 billion) and the European Union ($14.2 billion, up $3.2 billion), while the deficit with Canada fell $2.7 billion to $4.4 billion. The next release, covering October, is scheduled for December 8.
