UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in Manhattan in Premeditated Targeted Attack, Police Say

Brian Thompson, 50, chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed on the morning of December 4 in Midtown Manhattan, in New York County, New York. Thompson was walking to the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, where his parent company UnitedHealth Group was holding its annual investor conference, when a gunman approached him from behind at about 6:45 a.m. and shot him in the back and the leg.

Thompson was taken to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m. New York City police commissioner Jessica Tisch told a press conference that every indication was that this was a premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack, and that the suspect had been lying in wait for several minutes before Thompson arrived. The gunman fled the scene, and police released surveillance images of the suspect and offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest. The investor conference was called off after the shooting.

UnitedHealth Group, the Minnesota-based parent of UnitedHealthcare, issued a statement the same day: 'We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian's family and all who were close to him.'
