Pickup Rams Into Crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Killing 14: FBI Investigating as Terrorism
At about 3:15 a.m. on January 1, 2025, on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, a pickup truck drove around a police barricade and into a crowd celebrating the New Year. The driver then got out and exchanged gunfire with police and was killed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said 14 innocent people were killed, not including the attacker, and dozens of others were injured. The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.
The driver was Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a U.S. citizen, a Texas resident and an Army veteran. The FBI said he rented the vehicle in Houston and arrived in New Orleans on the evening of December 31.
On January 2, Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director of the FBI's Counterterrorism Division, said the incident was an act of terrorism and was premeditated, that Jabbar was "100% inspired by ISIS," that he acted alone and that no one else was involved.
The FBI said that in the hours before the attack, Jabbar posted several videos on a social media account proclaiming support for ISIS.
The FBI said Jabbar placed two improvised explosive devices on Bourbon Street. One was in a cooler at Bourbon and St. Peter streets and was placed at 1:53 a.m.; the other was at Bourbon and Toulouse streets and was placed at 2:20 a.m. Neither device exploded, and both were rendered safe.
The FBI also found explosive materials at his rental property and determined that he acted alone in setting a fire and that he acted alone in the attack.
The FBI executed multiple court-authorized search warrants in New Orleans and other states, and evidence response teams processed the scene. The FBI asked anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
