Congress Certifies 2024 Election Results: Trump 312 to Harris 226, With Harris Presiding

On January 6, 2025, the United States Congress met in joint session in the chamber of the House of Representatives at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., to count and certify the electoral votes of the 2024 presidential election: Donald Trump received 312 votes and Kamala Harris 226, formally confirming Trump as the 47th President-elect of the United States.
The session was presided over by Vice President Kamala Harris in her role as President of the Senate, even as she was the Democratic presidential nominee who had lost the election. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson sat beside her on the rostrum. Each chamber appointed two tellers: Senators Debra Fischer and Amy Klobuchar for the Senate, and Representatives Bryan Steil and Joseph Morelle for the House.
The tellers read aloud the certificates of electoral votes from each state and the District of Columbia. The whole number of electors was 538, and a majority was 270. The result for President was: Donald J. Trump of Florida, 312 votes; Kamala D. Harris of California, 226 votes. The result for Vice President was the same: J.D. Vance, 312 votes; Tim Walz, 226 votes.
Harris then announced the state of the vote. Under the Congressional Record, that announcement by the President of the Senate is deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons elected President and Vice President for the term beginning January 20, 2025. The count was completed smoothly, without objection.
The tally matched the outcome of election night in November 2024, when Trump won the Electoral College 312 to 226. The January 6 joint session was the final constitutional step before the inauguration on January 20.
