On January 6, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, the capital, that he would resign as leader of the Liberal Party and as prime minister once the party had chosen its next leader. "I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process," Trudeau said.

Trudeau said he had asked the president of the Liberal Party the previous evening to begin that selection process. "This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and if I'm having to fight internal battles, I just cannot be the best option in that election," he said.

He also said he had advised the Governor General that Parliament needed to be prorogued, and that the Governor General had agreed; Parliament would be prorogued until March 24. Trudeau would remain prime minister until a new leader was chosen.

Trudeau had been in power for nearly a decade, since 2015. Calls within the Liberal Party for him to step aside had grown after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned abruptly on December 16, 2024, with a number of Liberals publicly urging him to make way.
