Senate Confirms Sean Duffy as Secretary of Transportation, 77 to 22

The U.S. Senate in Washington voted 77 to 22 on January 28, 2025, to confirm Sean Duffy as secretary of transportation. Duffy became the 20th person to hold the post and was sworn in the same day by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
Duffy represented Wisconsin in the U.S. House for nearly nine years before working as a television host. President Donald Trump announced his nomination on November 18, 2024. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee held his confirmation hearing on January 15, focusing on aviation safety and infrastructure; the committee advanced the nomination 28 to 0 on January 22, and the Senate voted 97 to 0 on January 27 to close debate.
Before the final vote, the Trump administration's freeze on federal grant funding drew objections, and some Democratic senators who had planned to support Duffy voted no. Senator Tammy Duckworth said in a statement that day that she had been prepared to vote to confirm him but could not do so while transportation funding was being withheld.
At his hearing, Duffy said he would put safety first. The Department of Transportation oversees aviation, highway, rail and freight safety nationwide, including the Federal Aviation Administration.
