Canada's Liberals Win Federal Election: Carney Takes 169 Seats to Form Minority Government

Monday, April 28, 2025 · World · GSM News

Canada held its 45th federal general election on April 28, 2025. According to results published by Elections Canada, the Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Mark Carney won 169 of the 343 seats in the House of Commons, securing a fourth consecutive term in office as a minority government, three seats short of the 172 needed for a majority.

The main opposition Conservative Party won 144 seats with 41.31 percent of the vote, a substantial gain over the previous election, but its leader Pierre Poilievre lost his own riding of Carleton in Ontario. The Bloc Québécois won 22 seats. The New Democratic Party fell to just seven seats and lost official party status, and its leader Jagmeet Singh also failed to hold his seat. The Green Party won one seat. The Liberals' national vote share of 43.76 percent was the party's highest since 1980, and turnout of 69.5 percent was the highest since 1993.

Carney, a former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, won the Liberal leadership on March 9, 2025, succeeded Justin Trudeau as prime minister on March 14, and advised the Governor General to dissolve Parliament on March 23, triggering the early election. He had never previously held elected office and was elected in the Ottawa riding of Nepean.

The election took place amid strained Canada-U.S. relations: the Trump administration had imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and repeatedly made remarks touching on Canadian sovereignty, and how Canada should respond to U.S. tariffs and defend its economic sovereignty became the central issue of the campaign. Carney campaigned on countering the impact of U.S. tariffs and diversifying Canada's economy.
