Mexico's Sheinbaum Answers US Indictment of Sinaloa Governor: Claims Need Evidence, Sovereignty and Jurisdiction Stand

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World · GSM News

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to a United States indictment of Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha. US prosecutors unsealed an indictment in New York charging Rocha and nine other current and former officials with alleged links to the Sinaloa Cartel.

Sheinbaum said on November 5 that her position is truth, justice and the defence of sovereignty, and that the US claims lack credibility unless they are backed by actual evidence. She added that if Mexico's Attorney General's Office receives clear and irrefutable evidence under Mexican law, or if its own investigation finds elements constituting a crime, it must proceed in accordance with the law under Mexican jurisdiction.

The case could strain relations between the two neighbours. Observers are watching how the Sheinbaum administration reacts in the coming days, including whether Mexico asks Washington to share evidence and whether bilateral security cooperation is affected.
