[Video] Canadian Prime Minister Carney Visits the White House and Tells Trump Canada Will Never Be for Sale

At the White House in Washington, D.C., Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met President Trump on May 6, 2025, in their first face-to-face meeting. Carney had led the Liberal Party to victory in Canada's federal election on April 28, and this was his first trip to the United States since winning.
Trump congratulated Carney in the Oval Office, calling his comeback one of the greatest in political history and saying Canada had chosen a very talented person. Carney thanked the president for the hospitality, called him a transformational president, and said the two countries' history shows they are stronger when they work together, adding that he had come both to address the issues between them and to find areas of mutual cooperation.
The most closely watched exchange concerned the '51st state.' Trump said he still believed it would be much better for Canada, bringing a massive tax cut and free military protection, but that it takes two to tango. Carney replied that, as the president knew from real estate, some places are never for sale, including the room they were sitting in and Buckingham Palace. Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign, he said, Canada is not for sale and won't be for sale, ever; the opportunity lies in partnership, and his government was committed to a step change in investment in Canadian security and to playing Canada's full weight in NATO. Trump answered, 'Never say never,' and Carney replied, 'Never, never, never.'
On trade, Trump said the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement was still very effective, a transitional step away from NAFTA that would be renegotiated very shortly, and later added that it was a good deal for all countries, with a negotiation coming up over the next year or so to adjust it or terminate it. Carney said the agreement is a basis for a broader negotiation, that some things about it will have to change, and that the way the current tariffs had been conducted had taken advantage of existing aspects of the agreement. Asked what it would take to lift the tariffs on Canada, Trump said both sides wanted to protect their automobile businesses and noted that both countries have a tremendous abundance of energy.
Trump also used the meeting to announce news from the Middle East: the Houthis had said they did not want to fight anymore and would not blow up ships anymore, and the United States would take their word and stop the bombings effective immediately. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the operation had always been a freedom-of-navigation mission, and if the attacks were going to stop, the United States could stop.
After the meeting, Carney told reporters that the two had met as leaders of two sovereign, independent nations, that the discussions had been very constructive, that they had agreed to further conversations in the coming weeks, and that he looked forward to meeting Trump in person at the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada. He also said he had asked Trump during the meeting to stop referring to Canada as the 51st state. (Source: The White House)
