San Diego County Proclaims October 1–8 Climate Week, With Tijuana River Pollution in Focus

SAN DIEGO COUNTY — San Diego is a city in San Diego County, California. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed October 1–8, 2026 as San Diego Climate Week. According to CitizenPortal's record of the board proceedings, supervisors said the week of events — community talks, cleanups and policy discussions — is meant to engage residents and local governments on challenges from extreme heat and drought to coastal erosion.
A central focus this year is cross-border pollution in the Tijuana River: sewage and trash flowing from the Mexican side have long fouled beaches in the county's south, forcing frequent closures. The county is also tracking federal offshore drilling proposals affecting its coastline, and reminded the public that comments under the Clean Water Act process are due by October 9.
San Diego was among the first California counties to adopt a systematic climate action plan. The county said Climate Week events are open to the public, with schedules on the county website, and coastal cities and community groups are holding related activities during the week.
Tijuana River pollution has plagued San Diego County for decades: sewage-laden flows cross the border during storms and equipment failures, and southern beaches such as Imperial Beach have faced frequent, sometimes prolonged closures, with surfers and coastal residents reporting illnesses. The county has pressed state and federal agencies — and, through them, Mexican counterparts — on expanding and maintaining treatment facilities for years, and it folded the issue into Climate Week to connect climate discussion with a pollution problem that already shapes daily life. Other Climate Week programming includes community tree plantings, coastal cleanups and school environmental lessons, deliberately spread across the county so residents can join nearby; recordings and materials from several talks will be posted on the county website for those who miss the live events.
