Vietnam Marks National Innovation Day on October 1 as Policy Push Moves Toward Practice

Thursday, October 1, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Vietnam marked National Innovation Day on October 1. Under Government Decree No. 268/2025, October 1 is designated annually as National Innovation Day, with the Ministry of Science and Technology as the chair agency. The 2026 theme, 'Innovation – A Development Driver for the Whole of Society,' was echoed by initiative movements, idea competitions and technical programmes across the country.

The designation implements the Communist Party's resolutions on science and innovation, shifting the emphasis from policy drafting to practical execution. Vietnam's revised science, technology and innovation strategy through 2030 names innovation a key driver of growth, with targets including a place among the world's top 40 in the Global Innovation Index and total social investment in research and development of at least 2 percent of GDP.

A core series of events ran in Hanoi from September 25 to October 5 around the National Convention Center, including the Vietnam InnoShow 2026 exhibition with more than 100 booths from technology companies and financial institutions, and a central celebration ceremony on October 4.

For Chinese entrepreneurs and engineers working in Vietnam, the day signals opening policy channels for patents, research funding and university-industry collaboration. Official targets also include annual growth of 16 to 18 percent in patent applications and grants, and innovation activity at more than 40 percent of businesses.
