Pharmac Widens Funded Cancer Treatment Access for Young New Zealanders

Friday, October 2, 2026 · World News · GSM News

New Zealand's medicines agency Pharmac decided on 2 October 2026 to expand access to funded cancer treatments for adolescents and young adults with paediatric-origin cancers, a move welcomed by Health Minister Simeon Brown and Associate Health Minister David Seymour. In a government statement that day, the ministers said pharmaceutical funding is a matter of life or death for many New Zealanders, or the difference between living with pain and living freely, and that this is why it has been a focus of the government.

Pharmac decides which medicines and medical products receive public funding in New Zealand, so its decisions directly affect whether patients can access treatment affordably. The expanded access covers adolescents and young adults with cancers that originate in childhood, a group that has often fallen between paediatric and adult treatment systems on funding questions.

The government also announced the same day that a site had been selected for a new weather radar for the Nelson Tasman region. The project was fast-tracked after severe weather in July 2025, with a government commitment of up to NZ$5 million. Emergency Management and Recovery Minister Mark Mitchell and other ministers said the radar would give local communities more timely and accurate weather information.

Medicines funding and disaster infrastructure are both live cost-of-living and public-service issues in the election campaign. With the vote set for 7 November, party promises on health and public services will keep being tested by voters and media, and Pharmac's funding decisions will be debated in that context.
