California State Parks Awards $2.125 Million Emergency Contract to Repair Malibu Pier, Work Starts This Month

MALIBU, Calif. — California State Parks announced on October 2 that repairs will begin later this month on Malibu Pier at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, following the award of an emergency contract — a major step toward safely reopening the end of the pier, which has been temporarily closed since January 2025 as a precaution over critical structural concerns. The rest of the pier has remained open to the public.
Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-October and last approximately three months, with completion expected by the end of January 2027. The $2.125 million project, funded through Proposition 4, the 2024 climate bond, was awarded to Cushman Contracting Corporation and will repair or replace deteriorated and missing pilings and replace bracing to strengthen the pier. The award was aided by the Governor's September 21 emergency proclamation ahead of the anticipated El Niño storm season.
Above-water and underwater inspections following the closure confirmed the need for significant repairs, and a specialized ocean engineering consultant completed a comprehensive structural assessment in June 2026 identifying deteriorated and missing pilings. State Parks is coordinating with the State Fire Marshal, the California Coastal Commission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the State Lands Commission and the State Water Resources Control Board to expedite regulatory reviews and emergency permitting, and continues to work closely with the City of Malibu.
The iconic Malibu Pier offers fishing, dining and sweeping surf views. State Parks says project updates and information on the temporary closure of the end of the pier will be posted on its project FAQ webpage as major repair milestones are reached.
