Peru Extends Pataz State of Emergency From October 3 as the Country Enters Election-Eve Restrictions

Friday, October 2, 2026 · World News · GSM News

LIMA - The Peruvian government announced on October 2, through state media, an extension of the state of emergency in Pataz province, La Libertad region, with the new period taking effect on October 3. Pataz is one of the districts where illegal mining and organised crime intertwine most violently in Peru, with gold mining bringing killings, extortion and attacks; during the emergency, certain constitutional rights are restricted and security forces can tighten control of mining areas and roads.

The same day, Peru entered the final preparation phase for the October 4 regional and municipal elections. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) was completing delivery of election materials to voting districts on October 2 under round-the-clock oversight, and from October 2 public political demonstrations were prohibited as campaigning entered its silence period. The National Jury of Elections (JNE) has estimated that official results will be known in November.

On election security, the armed forces have deployed more than 41,000 troops to guarantee a safe vote. State news on October 2 also reported an express ID service by the national registry (Reniec) for the elections and labour measures for election-day workers and polling-station members.

The Pataz extension, running in parallel with election security, reflects the two fronts of the Fujimori government's order agenda: a hard line against illegal mining and criminal gangs, and a peaceful local vote under heavy security. The officials elected on October 4 take office in 2027, and governing mining districts such as Pataz will keep testing the central government's resolve.
