Tens of Thousands Protest Across Spain Over Housing Crisis After Decrees Rejected

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Madrid and other Spanish cities on Saturday, October 3, stepping up demands for action on a mounting housing crisis after government measures were struck down by the opposition in parliament the day before.

The Spanish government said about 70,000 protesters joined the demonstration in Madrid, some waving posters calling for a general strike. In the southeastern city of Valencia, demonstrators clashed with police who fired rubber bullets and tear gas; about 30 protesters briefly entered the City of Arts and Sciences landmark before being removed. Demonstrations in 50 other cities were peaceful.

One Madrid demonstrator, 26-year-old Nando de Anguulo, called the parliamentary rejection a shame, saying it proved people must adapt to political parties rather than politicians responding to what people want.

Spanish media reported on Friday that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez might call a snap election for November and would watch the strength of Saturday's protests before deciding. His office declined to comment.
