Weekend Look: GTA 6's November Window Casts a Long Shadow Over the 2026 Release Schedule

Saturday, October 3, 2026 · Games · GSM News

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3 — After its delay into November 2026, Rockstar's GTA 6 is once again the gravitational center of the industry's release schedule, according to Polygon. Multiple publishers told The Game Business that a new GTA game is such a colossal and rare event that it absorbs the majority of the audience's money and playtime, so rivals will delay or move up their games to avoid the three-to-four-week 'safe zone' around its launch — and would even consider moving updates to live-service games.

The pattern echoes last year: EA CEO Andrew Wilson publicly acknowledged that events in the year might force a rethink of Battlefield 6's timing, and in the end GTA 6 slipped from 2025 to May 2026 and then to November, letting Battlefield 6 launch cleanly last October. At least one publisher, however, delayed its game straight back into the new window.

Polygon notes the complication this year is the calendar: a November window collides with the holiday shopping season, when shelf space and marketing budgets are tightest, raising the cost of avoidance. October's biggest titles — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Oct. 23 and Phantom Blade Zero on Oct. 29 — are both positioned to land before the GTA window closes.
