LA County | Eaton Fire-Destroyed Altadena Park Breaks Ground on Rebuild

Sunday, October 4, 2026 · California · GSM News

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Saturday, Oct. 3, to rebuild Charles White Park in Altadena, where the January 2025 Eaton Fire destroyed two playgrounds and restrooms in a community that lost more than 6,000 homes. About 200 residents and officials attended, planting a 10,000-pound coast live oak.

Plans for the five-acre park include a new recreation center, lighted pickleball courts, a splash pad, new landscaping and a nature-based inclusive playground designed by Disney Imagineers, plus public art honoring the late Black artist Charles White, for whom the park is named. The Walt Disney Company donated $5 million toward the restoration, with state funding also supporting the project.

"Altadena has lost so much, but it has not lost its spirit," said L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger. "Charles White Park, named for an artist who celebrated the dignity of everyday people, will once again be a home for recreation, culture and community."
