San Diego | Trash-Fee Billing Error Hits About 88,000 Households

Sunday, October 4, 2026 · California · GSM News

San Diego's new trash fee has produced a billing fiasco: the city sent incorrect fee data to the county tax collector, leaving roughly 87,700 homeowners overcharged or undercharged on their property tax bills, some by more than $1,000. Mayor Todd Gloria said the city's own trash portal had the correct information and blamed the data transfer, promising corrected figures and that affected homeowners will be made whole, while acknowledging city quality control should have caught the error.

Councilmember Henry Foster and other critics put City Hall's management on the hot seat, and ahead of the November election several council candidates said the mayor should hire a chief operating officer to run daily operations, calling the episode another example of operational failures at City Hall.
