Two Dead in Flooding in Spain's Catalonia After Torrential Rain and Red Alert

Sunday, October 4, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Two people died and another was missing after heavy rains and flooding in Spain's Catalonia region, authorities said on Sunday, October 4. Catalan leader Salvador Illa confirmed the death of a man after a wall collapsed in Tordera, north of Barcelona.

Firefighters said another person died in Montornes del Valles, while emergency services searched for a missing person in Pineda de Mar, 52 km north of Barcelona. Catalan authorities issued a red alert urging people to stay inside from 8 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday as an exceptional weather system over the Mediterranean threatened a 'mini-hurricane' landfall, regional weather service Meteocat said.

Torrential rain on Saturday flooded homes and left cars submerged in Bellvitge and Cornella near Barcelona, with motorways turned into huge puddles. Meteocat director Sarai Sarroca said the core of the exceptional system sat over the Mediterranean.

Flights were cancelled or delayed at Barcelona airport, all local trains were disrupted, shops shut early, football matches were called off and a performance of Verdi's Aida at Barcelona's Liceu opera house was cancelled.
