October 4 Sets a Golden Week Record: 210,000 Visitor Arrivals and 844,000 Border Movements in a Single Day

MACAO — October 4 was the peak day in the middle of the mainland's National Day Golden Week. Figures later released by the Public Security Police show total border movements through Macao's checkpoints reached 844,000 that day, with more than 210,000 visitor arrivals — both single-day records for a National Day holiday. The Tourism Office confirmed 210,000 arrivals on October 4, the highest single-day figure on record for the holiday period. The Hengqin checkpoint also set its own record, clearing more than 150,000 travellers in the day.

With flows so concentrated, crowd management was stepped up on the ground. Police ran crowd controls near the Ruins of St. Paul's on peak afternoons, pedestrian zones in the Rua dos Ervanários area and Taipa old town kept their noon-to-evening hours, and real-time crossing information was pushed to hotels and the travel trade through the police liaison mechanism. Hengqin border officials said traffic there had climbed day by day over the first four days of the holiday, yet even at 150,000 the checkpoint needed no flow-control diversion and its inspection halls stayed orderly.

That evening, the 34th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest staged its final night. Held under the theme of a Maritime Silk Road rendezvous, the contest ran over five nights from September 12, with October 1 and October 4 as its two Golden Week performance nights over the waters off the Macau Tower, accompanied by a carnival on the Science Center waterfront. Police added officers at viewing points and used drones to monitor traffic around the Sai Van Bridge.

Across the full holiday, arrivals from October 1 to 7 totalled 1.143 million, a daily average of 163,000. Industry representatives said family trips, cultural exploration and combined Macao–Hengqin itineraries proved most popular on the peak day, with more visitors venturing into community districts. The single-day record underlines Macao's pull as a regional short-break destination, while keeping pressure on checkpoint capacity, traffic management and visitor dispersal.
