Feds Launch Enforcement Action Against LAUSD Over Parent Notification Policies

Monday, October 5, 2026 · California · GSM News

The U.S. Department of Education and Department of Justice announced an enforcement action Monday against Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation's second-largest school system, over policies the administration says improperly require school employees to conceal sensitive student information, including gender identity, from parents.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon said parents are not the enemy and that schools should not keep important information from families. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon called parents children's natural providers and protectors. The administration also sent a joint letter to state attorneys general warning districts to comply with federal laws protecting parents' access to information.

The move revives the national fight over how much schools must tell parents and where student privacy begins. In Los Angeles, the next steps are the scope of the federal action, LAUSD's response, and whether other California districts change parent-notification policies.
