San Bernardino County Redistricting Moves to Independent Commission After 2030 Census

Monday, October 5, 2026 · California · GSM News

A new state law, SB 1414, will change how San Bernardino County draws future election districts: an independent commission of 14 county residents will decide the boundaries, removing final authority from elected officials.

Authored by state Sen. Eloise Gómez Reyes, the law overrides the advisory model created by Measure J in 2020, under which a citizen commission advises the Board of Supervisors. The new commission's work would take effect after the next census in 2030.

Backers say voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around. Critics, including Teamsters Local 1932 and Board Chair Dawn Rowe, say the law disregards a voter-approved process and reflects state overreach into local government. With years before the next redistricting, debate is likely to focus on eligibility, selection, and transparency. (Source: KVCR.)
