Spanish PM Sanchez Calls Snap Election for November 29

Monday, October 5, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday, October 5, called an early general election for November 29. His office had announced an institutional declaration at 9 a.m. local time amid widespread expectations of an early vote.

The decision followed parliament's rejection on Friday of the government's housing decrees, amid nationwide protests after the eviction of an 87-year-old woman in Madrid. Analysts said the moment could be Sanchez's most favourable despite the risk of losing power. He had repeatedly insisted elections would be held in 2027 and that he would complete his four-year term.

Polls show Sanchez trailing: a survey published October 5 by El Pais and Cadena SER, conducted by 40db in September, put his Socialist Party at 27.4%, behind the People's Party at 31.6%, with the anti-immigration Vox at 18.4%.

Housing is set to dominate the campaign, with Sanchez seeking to make the vote a referendum on the crisis and shift the narrative from this summer's Ceuta migrant crisis and corruption investigations involving his party and family, which he denies.
