Macao Records 6,628 Crimes in the First Half, Down 1.1 Percent: Security Authorities Report a Stable Overall Picture

MACAO — Security authorities released Macao's crime statistics for the first half of 2026 on October 5, recording 6,628 crimes in the January–June period, down 1.1 percent from a year earlier. Broadcaster TDM reported the release the same day. The figures point to a broadly stable public-security picture, with the overall caseload continuing to edge down. The announcement came in the middle of the National Day Golden Week peak, while security services maintained their holiday front-line deployment.

The half-year release is a routine publication by the Secretariat for Security, typically covering the total number of criminal cases opened, violent crime, theft, fraud and computer crime — categories of most concern to residents — along with the numbers of people detained and referred to the Public Prosecutions Office. In recent releases, telephone and online fraud, including credit-card online spending scams, have remained a prevention priority, with police combining prevention, loss recovery and enforcement, backed by community anti-fraud campaigns.

The security picture is also intertwined with gaming and visitor factors. After legislation criminalising illegal money exchange for gambling took effect last year, police adjusted how gaming-related cases are counted and ran joint operations with mainland public security departments to squeeze illegal exchange activities. The security authorities have said they are watching industry changes — including satellite casinos ending operations or changing their business model — for any public-order impact, with stepped-up intelligence gathering and risk assessment.

On the day of the release, Macao was in the middle of the combined Mid-Autumn and National Day travel peak. The Public Security Police had rolled out a full holiday deployment, and following Secretary for Security Chan Tsz King's front-line inspection on October 3, officers continued to keep order at checkpoints, tourist hotspots and major event venues. The authorities said deployments would continue to be adjusted in line with the latest security situation to protect residents and visitors alike.
