Raleigh City Council Approves Six-Month Data Center Moratorium

The Raleigh, North Carolina City Council voted on October 6 to approve a six-month moratorium on data center construction. According to commercial real estate outlet Bisnow, the city will use the pause to study assessment standards for data centers' impact on power supply, water resources and neighborhoods before deciding whether to revise zoning rules. Driven by the SI boom, data centers have been expanding rapidly across the U.S., and their enormous power and water demands have raised community concerns. Raleigh's Research Triangle area is a major data center hub in the Southeast. Council members backing the moratorium said the city must balance growth with residents' needs; industry hopes for clear rules soon to avoid prolonged uncertainty for investment.
