Newsom Signs First-in-Nation Law Forcing Big Firms to Disclose Slavery-Era Ties

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · California · GSM News

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed first-in-the-nation AB 2599, requiring large companies doing business in California to scour historical records and publicly disclose slavery-era transactions — advancing the state's reparations agenda.

It covers firms with $100M+ in annual worldwide gross receipts that existed (or whose predecessor existed) on or before Dec. 31, 1964. Once funded, companies must file affidavits under penalty of perjury covering purchases/sales of enslaved people, their use as loan collateral, slave-related insurance and more, published via a state digital platform. First filings are due Jan. 15, 2029.

"This requires large companies that operated before 1965 to search their records for ties to slavery going back to 1849 and then we make it public," Newsom said. "Accountability starts with the truth." (Via Fox News)
