Italian Football Federation to Enter Special Administration as Malago Steps Aside

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Italy's Olympic Committee (CONI) executive board voted unanimously on October 6 to place the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) under extraordinary administration and propose its president Giovanni Malago to oversee daily operations, subject to ratification by CONI's National Council. The move ends weeks of governance upheaval.

Malago won the federation presidency in June with over 68% of the vote, but legal inquiries commissioned by the Olympic authorities questioned the ballot's validity on technical grounds, because he was not a FIGC member at the time of his election. Under the arrangement, he will step down as president and then serve as special administrator.

In that role he will steer the federation toward new presidential elections within three months, during which his formal standing can be regularised, and he will be eligible to stand in the election, due no later than January 31 next year.

The dispute comes as Italian football faces structural challenges, including venue upgrades needed to co-host Euro 2032 and the fallout from missing three consecutive World Cups.
