California Energy Commission Opens $28 Million for EV Fast Charging

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · California · GSM News

SACRAMENTO — The California Energy Commission (CEC) announced on October 7 that a new $28 million round of the Fast Charge California Project is open for applications to install DC fast chargers across the state. Incentives run up to $100,000 per charging port and can cover 100% of eligible project costs. The application window runs from October 7, 2026 to January 14, 2027; projects must be permit-ready with final utility service designs, and priority goes to disadvantaged, low-income and tribal communities.

The project is administered through the California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project (CALeVIP). A spring round awarded $56.9 million for 1,266 fast-charging ports across all 58 counties, 67% of them in priority communities. The next round is set to open February 24, 2027, with incentives of up to $55,000 per port.

Spencer Reeder, director of the CEC's Fuels and Transportation Division, said the funding is meant to make charging convenient and reliable for all Californians. Scott Shepard, senior director of transportation electrification at the Center for Sustainable Energy, which administers the program, said the application process has been streamlined and incentive caps raised, and urged applicants to move quickly — spring funding was committed within weeks. CALeVIP has supported 10,200 chargers since 2017, and California now has more than 2.2 million light-duty electric vehicles.
