Holborn and St Pancras By-Election Enters Final Stretch in Labour–Green Contest

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · World News · GSM News

The parliamentary by-election in London's Holborn and St Pancras constituency entered its final stretch ahead of polling day on 8 October, Reuters reported on 7 October. The seat was vacated by the resignation of former Labour leader Keir Starmer.

Labour's candidate is Sagal Abdi-Wali, leader of Camden Council. Her principal opponent is Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party. The Greens achieved their best-ever local election results in May, and the by-election is seen as a test of whether they can break through in a traditional Labour stronghold.

The war in Gaza forms a key backdrop: Labour's position on the conflict has cost it support among left-leaning voters, while the Greens have actively courted progressive voters in urban seats such as those in London. The parties have also clashed over housing, the cost of living and local public services.

The result is expected on Friday 9 October. For Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who took office in July, holding this central London seat carries significant political symbolism.
