Long Beach Activates Speed Camera System, With a 60-Day Warning Period Through December 7

Wednesday, October 7, 2026 · California · GSM News

Long Beach is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Long Beach has activated a citywide speed safety system, administered by the Department of Public Works, with automated speed devices at 18 locations. The devices photograph only the rear license plate of vehicles traveling at least 11 mph over the posted limit, with no continuous video recording and no facial recognition. A 60-day warning period began October 7 and runs through December 7, during which only warnings are issued. After that, a first violation at 11 to 15 mph over the limit still draws a warning; subsequent violations carry civil fines of $50 to $500 depending on speed, with no license points and no effect on driving records. State Sen. Lena Gonzalez said the city's 53 fatal traffic collisions last year were the highest in more than a decade; Mayor Rex Richardson said the program's goal is to change driving behavior and reduce deaths and injuries.
