Ukrainian Journalist and Cameraman Detained in Vienna, Later Released

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Ukrainian investigative journalist Mykhailo Tkach and cameraman Yaroslav Bondarenko were violently detained by Austrian police in Vienna on 8 October 2026. The two work for Ukrainska Pravda and were in Austria on an editorial assignment investigating the whereabouts of former Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.

According to Tkach, armed, masked policemen surrounded their car, smashed its windows, pointed weapons at them and forced them to the ground. Bondarenko suffered injuries from the shattered glass and required medical treatment. Both were detained on suspicion of espionage and related offences, and both have since been released. The Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office has reportedly stated that the suspicions against them were not substantiated.

The Association of European Journalists said it was deeply concerned and demanded that the Austrian authorities explain the legal and evidential basis for the operation, the force used and the treatment the two men received in custody. It recognised that law enforcement has a duty to investigate credible suspicions, but said that duty does not exempt the state from respecting fundamental rights and due process.

Their release does not settle the matter. Journalists do not enjoy immunity from legitimate criminal investigations, but the association stressed they must be able to pursue matters of public interest without intimidation or disproportionate force. The case is linked to the arrest of two other Ukrainian men in Vienna earlier the same week, and the wider investigation is continuing.
