DOJ Sues Denver Officials, Challenging Local Rules Affecting Federal Officers

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The Justice Department's Civil Division disclosed on Oct. 8 that the federal government has filed suit against the City and County of Denver and several of its officials, including Mayor Michael B. Johnston. The lawsuit challenges local Denver rules that affect federal officers. The department highlighted the case in its daily news update. In the federal government's view, Denver's local rules affect the ability of federal officers to operate in the area, prompting the court challenge. The Justice Department did not elaborate on the rules' specifics or the complaint's details in the update. Disputes between federal and local governments over enforcement authority have surfaced in many U.S. cities in recent years. The Denver case once again puts the long-running tension between federal enforcement power and local self-governance before a federal court. The suit's progress will be closely watched.
