The 167th Mississippi State Fair opened October 8 at the Fairgrounds in Jackson, running through October 18 under the theme "Let Freedom Ring!" in honor of America250, the Clarion Ledger reported.

The fairgrounds at 207 Mississippi Street feature more than 60 rides and over 100 food vendors. Rapper Flo Rida is scheduled to perform at the Coliseum on October 15 at 7 p.m. New food items this year include the "Brisket Biscuit."

The Mississippi State Department of Health announced October 8 that inspectors have checked all food vendors at the fair. Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson, who is running for governor, welcomed fairgoers to the annual event.

Admission is $10, with free entry before 1 p.m. on weekdays and free admission for children 5 and under.

At the 11 a.m. opening ceremony at Gate 1, Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson led a parade down the central midway after the ribbon cutting; Jackson State University handled the flag ceremony, the Mississippi National Guard performed a flyover, and Gipson then drove his 1968 Chevrolet C-10 vintage pickup along the parade route.
