California Fields New Swiftwater Rescue Fleet Ahead of Storm Season

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · California · GSM News

Governor Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that California is deploying a new swiftwater rescue fleet statewide: heavy-duty 4WD tow vehicles, rescue trailers, two motorized inflatable rescue boats per team, plus protective gear and specialized tools for all 13 Type 1 Swiftwater Rescue Teams, ahead of an El Niño-driven storm season. The rollout is part of a Cal OES modernization that replaces equipment across all 13 teams, upgrades the State Operations Center, and adds a satellite-imagery partnership that can monitor floods and wildfires in near real time — through clouds, smoke and darkness. The state also reminded residents: never drive through flooded roads. About six inches of water can stall a car, and a foot can float it. Keep emergency supplies ready and sign up for local alerts.
