13 Swimmers' Maritime Border Crossing Attempt Deterred Near Imperial Beach; All Return to Mexico
Imperial Beach is a city in San Diego County, California. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported on October 8 that the Border Patrol's San Diego Sector and the Coast Guard's San Diego Sector deterred a dangerous maritime border crossing attempt near Imperial Beach. At 8:40 p.m., a Coast Guard drone team detected nine people swimming north across the maritime boundary; after the drone illuminated them, the group turned south and returned to Mexico. Minutes later, four more swimmers were detected and also turned back. By 9:22 p.m., all 13 people had returned to Mexico without incident.
