2026 Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to International Jurist Navi Pillay

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on October 9 that the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to South African international jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, honoring her long-running work to promote peace and international law and to advance accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, Pillay began her legal career defending anti-apartheid activists. She later served on South Africa's High Court, as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as a judge of the International Criminal Court, and as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She also chaired a UN independent commission of inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and has served as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in the Myanmar genocide case.
The committee praised Pillay's independence, expertise and steadfastness, calling her one of the most respected international jurists of our time. It said the award is a reminder that peace rests on the rule of law, that war crimes should be prosecuted and that victims should see justice served. The award ceremony is scheduled for December 10 in Oslo. (Compiled by GSM from NobelPrize.org)
