San Marcos Decoy Sting: 1 of 5 Stores Sells to Minor Decoy, 1 Adult Buys Alcohol for a Minor

Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and one minor decoy fanned out across San Marcos on Oct. 8 to test whether stores and strangers would illegally supply alcohol to a minor. In the minor-decoy portion, the decoy tried to buy alcohol at five retailers under deputies' direct supervision, and one store made the sale. In the "shoulder tap" portion, conducted outside two liquor stores, the decoy asked 12 adults to buy alcohol for them, and one adult did. Under California law, furnishing alcohol to a minor carries a minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service. The Sheriff's Office partners with ABC through the Alcohol Policing Partnership grant program — it received $100,000 in July — and similar operations will continue across its patrol areas. Residents who see licensed businesses selling alcohol to minors can call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or the Sheriff's non-emergency line at (858) 868-3200.
