California's largest state workers union authorizes first-ever one-day strike on Oct. 21

Friday, October 9, 2026 · California · GSM News

SEIU Local 1000, California's largest union of state workers, announced this week that 96.2% of voting members approved a strike authorization, and the union has set a one-day strike for Wednesday, October 21 — the first strike in its history. Local 1000 represents about 100,000 state employees, including nurses, educators, IT staff and administrative workers. The union filed an unfair-practice charge in July accusing the state of bad-faith bargaining; in late September the Public Employment Relations Board found that the state's labor negotiator, CalHR, had "refused to meet and confer in good faith," and the dispute has since moved into mediation. The union's main demands include a 20% general pay increase over three years (7% in 2026, 7% in 2027 and 6% in 2028), a larger state contribution toward health care costs, and more transparent telework rules. The administration says it remains ready to negotiate a fair and responsible agreement. A note for readers: strike lines are planned at government buildings in Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino, Norwalk and other cities that day. Services at DMV offices and at unemployment and disability insurance counters may be delayed or suspended, so residents who need a driver's license, vehicle registration or benefits are advised to take care of business early or check official websites for the day's arrangements.
