Ahead of El Niño, California Pre-Positions Sandbags and Inspects Levees for Winter Storms

Governor Gavin Newsom said on October 9 that California is moving early ahead of a potentially historic El Niño winter storm season, pre-positioning millions of sandbags and other flood-fighting supplies statewide, inspecting levees and water infrastructure, and helping coastal communities prepare for flooding and erosion.
The work follows the Governor's September 21 emergency proclamation. Officials note Kelvin waves have already raised sea levels this year and Pacific storms fueled by warm ocean water have sent strong waves into the California coast. Residents in low-lying and coastal areas should clear drains, prepare emergency supplies and follow local and National Weather Service alerts.
