Ahead of Chung Yeung Festival on October 18: Full Closure at Tseung Kwan O Cemetery on the Day, Vehicle Bookings Required at Tsang Tsui Columbarium

HONG KONG — This year's Chung Yeung Festival falls on Sunday, October 18. Ahead of the festival, the Transport Department and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) have published special traffic and worship arrangements for cemeteries and columbaria, to be implemented in phases from early October to mid-November. Grave-sweepers should check the closure dates and booking requirements for their destination and use public transport where possible.
For the Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery, the Transport Department notice states that the access road from Ko Chiu Road to the cemetery will be closed from 5:30am to 6pm on October 11, 17, 19, 24 and 25 and November 1 and 8, except for emergency vehicles, the KMB Route 14S special bus service, hearses, funeral processions and vehicles with valid cemetery permits. On the festival day itself, October 18, a full closure will apply from 5:30am to 8pm, with emergency vehicles only. Visitors can walk to the cemetery via the Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries footpath opposite MTR Tiu Keng Leng Station or via the Ko Chiu Road access road; as the footpath has steps, wheelchair users are advised to use the Ko Chiu Road entrance.
KMB Route 14S between Yau Tong and the cemetery will operate from 7:30am to 5:25pm on the general closure days, with extra departures subject to demand. Some KMB bus stops on Lei Yue Mun Road will be temporarily relocated, the green minibus stops for Routes 24 and 24M suspended, and temporary drop-off points for taxis and public light buses will be provided on Ko Chiu Road and Lei Yue Mun Road. The department advises the public to travel before or after the festival peak, avoid the noon-to-2pm busy period, and check the Transport Department website, the HKeMobility app or hotline 1823 for the latest arrangements.
At the Tsang Tsui Columbarium in Tuen Mun, the FEHD's vehicle booking system applies: apart from authorised vehicles, members of the public driving to the columbarium must book through the FEHD website one to 14 days in advance on a first-come, first-served basis, and unbooked vehicles will not be admitted. For the joss-paper furnaces, from October 3 to November 15, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there will be no on-the-spot queuing: users must book online or take a ticket from the on-site machine, furnace use is limited to eight minutes per session, and a free collection-and-burning service is available for those who hand their offerings to staff instead of waiting.
The FEHD urges visitors to avoid the festival-day peak, consider visiting on days before or after October 18, and use greener alternatives such as fresh flowers, online tributes and smokeless incense; its free "memorial.gov.hk" portal allows online remembrance. Enquiries for the Tsang Tsui Columbarium can be made on 2713 1077. Phased road closures and bus diversions also apply around other cemeteries, including Cape Collinson in Chai Wan and in Sha Tin, over the Chung Yeung period; travellers should check the latest Transport Department and Police traffic notices before setting out.
